Life Update

August/September has been a convergence of L I F E. Lots going on, all at the same time. Family stuff, but also, in my other professional librarian life, the major renovation of the high school library where I work finished up TWO MONTHS ahead of schedule! Great news for students and staff, wild timing for the start of the school year and book launching for me. Here’s a peek at the new library. We’re so thrilled about it!

• November 15 - Wisconsin Association of Environmental Education Conference (Beaver Creek Reserve, Fall Creek, WI)

• Last but not least, local author, friend, and librarian colleague Caroline Akervik and I are in the midst of planning a joint book launch. Local folks - stay tuned!

In Sturgeon News

• The September hook-and-line sturgeon fishing season is wrapping up. I’ve gotten some great pictures from the Lady Legends of Lake Holcombe (who are featured in the book).

• If ever you thought, like me, “I wish I had a lake sturgeon stuffie…” well, you’re in luck. I found one from Cabin Critters. So cute.

• The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has great coverage of Wisconsin lake sturgeon. I enjoyed this article about how Wisconsin lake sturgeon are being used to reintroduce lake sturgeon to waters in Tennessee and Georgia.

In Reading News…

I very much enjoyed these recent reads. I encourage you to seek them out!

Historical fiction graphic novel, dual timeline between 2011 and 1943 Amsterdam. Fantastic use of color and historic photographs. On the long list for the National Book Award.

Nonfiction about the social history of tuberculosis, told through the lens of one boy the author John Green met in Sierra Leone. Find the audiobook, if possible.

Angeline Boulley’s latest YA mystery, about a Native girl both running from and to her past. Favorite characters return from past books.

From Wisconsin author Ann Bausum, a book about history that surprised me in how relevant it is to today’s current events. Excellent.
